What is a risk retention group?

A risk retention group (RRG) is a liability insurance company that is owned by its members. Under the Liability Risk Retention Act, RRGs must be domiciled in a state. Once licensed by its state of domicile, an RRG can insure members in all states. CHRRG is domiciled in South Carolina and writes business in the state of Indiana.

What is underwriting, and what factors are considered in evaluating my application?

Underwriting is the process of selecting applicants for insurance and classifying them according to their degrees of insurability so that the appropriate premium rates may be charged. The process includes rejection of unacceptable risks. The underwriting process includes reviewing several factors including loss data from an insured's previous carrier, contacting medical licensing authorities or a previous employer.

How will my premium be determined?

CHRRG premiums are calculated based on actuarial analysis of the group's previous history for five years in our program, or commercially filed rates if the group has not been in our program for five years. These premiums can then be subject to surcharges or discounts based on the group's underwriting.

How does someone get an application?

Please contact a CHRRG representative at 1-866-504-1085 or visit our Forms page.

Who can join or who is eligible for coverage?

The applicant must have a significant relationship with Clarian Health Partners.

Will I be penalized for my claims history?

The applicant is classified based on the frequency and severity of their claim history and then charged an appropriate premium.

If I am sued, who chooses my defense counsel?

CHRRG Claims Management assigns your counsel. CHRRG maintains a panel of defense counsel who specialize in medical malpractice defense.

If I am sued, will I be jointly defended with other CHRRG insureds?

Yes, as long as there is not a conflict.

Will I be allowed to choose whether I want to settle a claim?

Yes, so long as consent is not unreasonably withheld.

How do I get a copy of my certificate of insurance?

Please contact a CHRRG representative at 1-866-504-1085.

Who do I contact to verify coverage or provide a written claims history?

Please contact a CHRRG representative at 1-866-504-1085.

How do I terminate or cancel coverage?

The insured must send a written request (with a signature) for termination, including the requested date of termination, to P.O. Box 6031, Indianapolis, IN 46206.

Why is it important that I understand that CHRRG does not pay into the Indiana Insurance Guaranty Fund?

CHRRG doesn't participate in the Indiana Insurance Guaranty Fund. CHRRG is audited yearly and believes it is adequately capitalized. Additionally, CHRRG maintains multiple layers of reinsurance.

If I practice outside the state of Indiana, is my CHRRG professional liability coverage sufficient?

The insured should seek individual legal counsel, but in most cases no.

Where is the risk retention group located?

CHRRG is domiciled in Charleston, South Carolina, with a business office in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Who is on the CHRRG Board of Directors?

Norman Tabler, Marvin Pember, Randal Yust, John Fitzgerald, M.D., Matt Neff, Paul Nelson, M.D., Steve Pollom, M.D., and Robert Johnson serve on the CHRRG Board of Directors.
