Why is Human Milk the Perfect Nutrition?

A mother's own milk is the best nutrition for babies because it promotes important health benefits right after birth, as well as later in life. Studies show that mothers' own milk is more easily digested and contains special disease- and infection-fighting proteins called antibodies. It also plays a part in brain development, as studies show that babies who are fed mothers' milk have higher scores on vision and IQ testing. However, we know that there are special situations when mothers' own milk is not available. In these special situations, there are two feeding choices: pasteurized donor human milk and commercial formula.

Human milk is an ideal food for premature and sick infants, as it has the following benefits:

  • It is easily digested.
  • It enhances intestinal movement.
  • It contains multiple immune properties not present in commercial baby formula.

In many ways, human milk is like medicine to sick or premature babies. And when babies are not able to get this milk from their own mothers, milk banks can provide a healthy alternative. To donate please fill out the donor form.

Use of pasteurized donor milk has been shown to reduce the incidence of bowel inflammation, sepsis and infection in premature infants, resulting in shorter hospital stays.
