About the Milk Bank

Our Mission

The mission of the Indiana Mothers' Milk Bank is as follows:

  • To increase the availability of donor human milk for ill and premature infants
  • To recruit and screen potential human milk donors
  • To provide donor human milk processed by HMBANA guidelines
  • To educate the community about enhanced health outcomes for infants receiving human milk
  • To increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding in Indiana
  • To facilitate research with human milk and infant health outcomes

Member of HMBANA

The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) was founded in 1985 to ensure quality control of donor human milk banking among member banks through adherence to mandatory guidelines and periodic inspection of member banks. HMBANA also acts as a liaison between member institutions and governmental regulatory agencies. The Indiana Mothers' Milk Bank is a member of HMBANA and follows its guidelines for milk bank operations and best practices for handling human milk. Visit the HMBANA Web site.
