The Teen Summer of Service mission is to provide teens with meaningful opportunities that enrich their community service experiences, teach civic responsibility, and work toward strengthening our community. Get the Teen Summer of Service Program application now.
Applications for the 2009 Summer of Service Teen Program will be available starting in March. All applications are due to Volunteer Services by May 1, 2009. Participants must be between 14 and 18 years old by June 15, 2009.
Participants must commit to at least one, three-hour shift per week on consecutive weeks for a minimum of seven weeks from June through July. Program participants will be required to attend a minimum of two Clarian Health educational in-services during the summer. Students will be able to choose from a variety of topics related to the health care field.
Numerous service opportunities exist for Summer of Service participants throughout Clarian's Downtown facilities: Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children. Opportunities also are available at Clarian's Methodist Medical Plazas and HealthNet. They include:
Volunteers assist by sorting and delivering patient mail and performing other general clerical responsibilities. Additional responsibilities may include: entering volunteer hours, preparing in-patient welcome packets for various units, preparing human resources orientation and benefits packets, and preparing newborn baby packages. Opportunity requires good communication skills, dependability, and may require extensive walking.
Volunteers assist patient visitor representatives by greeting, directing and escorting patients, families, and visitors to the appropriate room or waiting area, answering phone calls, and tidying the A4-A5 visitor waiting room. Additional responsibilities may include: answering the phone, tidying the A4-A5 visitor waiting room, and passing out informational brochures. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, working-knowledge of Methodist Hospital, and may require extensive walking.
Volunteers assist patient visitor representatives by greeting, directing, and escorting patients, visitors, and staff at the B Lobby information center located on the Capitol Street entrance of Methodist Hospital. Volunteers also receive and deliver flowers to patient floors during the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, working-knowledge of Methodist Hospital, and may require extensive walking.
Volunteers assist patient visitor representatives by greeting, escorting, and familiarizing patients, families, and visitors with their respective destinations within Methodist Hospital. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, working-knowledge of Methodist Hospital, and may require extensive walking.
Volunteers assist patient visitor representatives by greeting, escorting, and familiarizing patients, families, and visitors with the MPC building located in Methodist Hospital. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, working-knowledge of Methodist Hospital, and may require extensive walking.
Volunteers assist both staff and visitors within the Methodist Hospital Medical Library with general responsibilities related to a library setting. Volunteers help visitors locate reading material relevant to their interest level, while also assisting the library staff with stocking, shelving, and organizing. Opportunity requires a high level of independence, self-motivation, working-knowledge of computers, and overall strong communication skills.
The Ruth Lilly Hospice Program is designed to provide comfort and support services to patients, families, and visitors on the Ruth Lilly Hospice floor located in Methodist Hospital. Program participants are required to complete the general volunteer on-boarding process, plus a six-week hospice training program that serves to better educate the volunteer on issues pertinent to the program. Unit-patient liaison volunteers are assigned to inpatient units within Methodist Hospital to provide signature customer and support services to patients, families, visitors, and staff through a general desire for direct volunteer-patient interaction. UPL responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: rounding throughout the unit to check on patients, answering call lights and communicating the patient's need to the proper staff member, stocking unit closets, assisting patients with ordering Classic Cuisine menus, visiting with patients and families, preparing unit welcome packets, and performing various clerical duties related to the unit. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, self-motivation and ability to work independently, extensive walking, and a general sensitivity towards the appropriate patient-volunteer experience. Unit-patient liaison opportunities exist on the following in-patient units:
Out-patient liaison volunteers provide customer services to patients, families, and visitors, including but not limited to acting as a liaison between waiting patients and clinical staff, offering emotional support during scheduled appointments or treatments and directing patients, families and visitors to other resources within the facility, while providing staff with support services such as maintaining a steady flow of patients through exam rooms, maintaining the cleanliness of exam rooms and waiting areas and transporting medical information and materials between clinics. Out-patient liaison opportunities exist in the following areas:
Educational volunteer opportunity designed to provide measurable service learning opportunities within Methodist Hospital Emergency Department that will expose pre-pharmacy and pharmacy students of central Indiana to the obstacles facing hospital physicians and pharmacists with regard to medication reconciliation. Opportunity requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours of service.
Volunteers work with a Child Life specialist in a group or individual setting to provide patients with play and diversion activities that will reduce stress and anxiety. General responsibilities include: assisting with the preparation of activities, cleaning and organizing equipment, and various clerical tasks. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, a desire to interact with youth, and extensive mobility.
Pet-a-Pet program is designed to bring trained canine companions into the hospital to uplift the spirit of our patients. Volunteer applicants & canine companions are required to complete a three- to four-week handler training course, designed and coordinated by Pet-A-Pet coordinators. The handler training class meets once per week for three to four consecutive weeks. This program entails approximately six (6) total weeks of training (excluding the time spent in obedience classes required for candidate consideration) for the applicant and the canine. A minimum one (1) calendar year commitment is required for this program. Opportunity requires certification from a three- to four-week handler training course, temperament testing, and a one (1) calendar year commitment.
The clowning program is a program designed to uplift the spirit of Methodist Hospital patients, families, and visitors through volunteer clown visits. Volunteer clowns travel to various in-patient floors, most specifically pediatric floors, to visit with Methodist Hospital patients. Volunteer clowns provide their own attire and their own trick supplies, but are provided with room numbers of patients in need of an uplifting experience. Opportunity requires advanced communication skills, self-motivated personality, and an overall desire to uplift the spirit of Clarian patients, families, and visitors.
Mended Hearts is a national support organization for individuals with heart disease, including people recovering from heart attacks, open heart surgery, and transplants. Members give hope and encouragement to others by providing living proof that people with heart disease can lead full, productive lives. As the survivor recovers and becomes active again, Mended Hearts encourages them to attend meetings and join in helping others. Mended Hearts volunteers visited approximately 400 patients in Methodist Hospital during 2006. Opportunity requires a commitment of one year and several mandatory training sessions. A program designed to provide signature-quality customer service and attention to Clarian Health patients, visitors, and families by making unit rounds throughout Methodist Hospital to reach out and enhance the health care experience. Volunteers push the room service-entertainment cart to various units, providing patients and families with coffee, tea, snacks, puzzles, and other forms of entertainment. Opportunity requires advanced communication skills, self-motivation, and extensive walking.
Volunteer interpreters assist the Language Services department with interpretations for limited English-speaking patients and visitors within Clarian facilities, making confirmation calls, and document translations. Opportunity requires a minimum six-month commitment and a thorough assessment conducted by the manager of Clarian Language Services.
Retired medical and nursing professionals volunteer their time within Clarian facilities to assist nursing and medical staff with day-to-day operations. White Cross Guild is a non-profit organization that was formed in the early 1940s to provide volunteer services to Methodist Hospital. It is a national organization that has positively impacted the history of Methodist Hospital. Various guilds from the central Indiana area gather to make heart pillows, puppy pillows, and unit supplies for Methodist Hospital patients and staff. A program designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities within Clarian Health facilities that will not only enlighten them on the importance of clinical interaction and clinical research, but will also provide for them a meaningful and measurable experience that will set them apart from peers wishing to embark on the same challenging medical and academic endeavors. Opportunity requires proof of enrollment in undergraduate or graduate institution, a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.2 or higher, and a six- to eight-week commitment
Volunteers assist the chaplaincy department with day-to-day clerical responsibilities such as: answering phones, making phone calls to churches to inform them of newly-admitted patients, and general record keeping/updating.
Volunteers meet and greet all newly-admitted patients to inform them of chaplaincy services and to relay information for follow-up visits. General responsibilities include: providing new patients with pre-printed "Pastoral Care" cards, tending to Bible requests, and scheduling follow-up pastoral visits for patients. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, extensive training, and a second interview.
Volunteer chaplains must have extensive academic and clinical credentials, in that they assume the same basic role as Methodist Hospital staff chaplains. Volunteer chaplains are assigned a specific floor in which they are responsible for carrying out pastoral care responsibilities.
