Clarian's Methodist Hospital Recognized Among Top Academic Medical Centers in the United States

10/01/09

INDIANAPOLIS - Clarian's Methodist Hospital has again been recognized as one of the nation's best academic medical centers by the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). This marks the third consecutive year that Methodist has received the prestigious Quality Leadership Award in recognition for excellence in delivering high quality care, as measured by the UHC Quality and Accountability Study conducted annually since 2005. Clarian's Methodist is one of only five AMCs to earn the award in 2009.

The Quality and Accountability Study was designed by UHC to identify best practices associated with high performance in quality and safety, in order to serve as models for academic medical centers across the country. In 2009, 93 academic medical centers were assessed and ranked across such aspects of care as safety, timeliness, effectiveness and patient centeredness. Those academic medical centers ranked among the top five include:

  • Methodist Hospital - A Clarian Health Partner, Indianapolis
  • Rush University Medical Center, Chicago
  • University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland
  • University Medical Center, Tucson
  • The University of Kansas Hospital Authority, Kansas City

"National recognition is well deserved for these organizations that have distinguished themselves as high-performing organizations in a complex environment. I salute the top performers and extend congratulations to all AMC leaders and employees who daily demonstrate a passion for improving patient care and operational effectiveness," said UHC President and Chief Executive Officer Irene M. Thompson.

The award will be presented at the 9th Annual UHC Quality and Safety Fall Forum meeting in Atlanta, GA on October 2. John Kohne, MD, chief operating officer of Methodist Hospital, Rhonda Smith, RN, vice president of nursing and patient care services at Methodist Hospital, and Michael Niemeier, MD, chief medical officer of Methodist Hospital will accept the award. Dr. Kohne and colleagues from other hospitals will speak about progress in the areas of enhanced communication, collaboration and innovation.

The Methodist Hospital award points to Clarian's consistent focus on patient-centered care. "At Clarian Health, the patient really is at the center of all that we do. As such, our team continually strives to offer nothing less than the best care to our patients, who come to us from across the globe," said Daniel F. Evans, Jr., president and CEO of Clarian Health. "We are honored and pleased that UHC has recognized Clarian's Methodist Hospital with the Quality Leadership Award for the third consecutive year."

A Teaching Hospital

Clarian Health is part of an academic medical center that includes Indiana University School of Medicine. The collaboration designates Methodist and IU hospitals as institutions of learning and knowledge transfer, and both hospitals are staffed with physicians from medical practices such as Methodist Medical Group and Indiana University Medical Group, among others.

"We work in close collaboration with Clarian to deliver quality, patient-focused care. This recognition amply acknowledges that fact about which we are proud," said D. Craig Brater, MD, dean of IU School of Medicine. "Educating our students and training our residents in such venues fosters a generation of physicians dedicated to patient-focused care with an emphasis on quality and accountability."

Emphasis on Quality

Clarian has been a strong advocate for an increased focus on quality and transparency to deliver enhanced health care to consumers at a fair cost and to elevate the quality of care provided.

"We have made a concerted effort to use technology to empower our patients and to elevate the standards of care," said Sam Odle, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Clarian Health. "The recognition for Methodist Hospital by UHC validates we are taking the right steps to ensure the delivery of quality, patient-focused care."

Patient Safety Collaboration

The UHC honor also reflects on Clarian's long-standing commitment to patient safety. Clarian has been an active participant in the Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety. This organization of medical and clinical leaders from central Indiana hospitals meets regularly to share information and work together to improve patient safety, enhance clinical outcomes, and work to ensure that each hospital has the best clinical practices in place. The goal is to achieve zero errors at all hospitals.

"All academic medical centers are working earnestly in the area of patient safety," said Kohne. "For Methodist to be ranked as a Top Performer for the third consecutive year demonstrates our level of commitment to patient care and safety."

More on the UHC Quality and Accountability Study

The UHC Quality and Accountability Study has been conducted annually since 2005 when UHC produced its first landmark study that examined key measures of organizational performance in quality and safety. The Institute of Medicine's six domains of care continue to be used as a guide in structuring the performance categories. The focus has centered on the outcomes of care to identify associated characteristics of high-performing academic medical centers.
