Teen Summer of Service Program

The Teen Summer of Service mission is to provide teens with meaningful opportunities that enrich their community service experiences, teach civic responsibility, and work toward strengthening our community. Get the Teen Summer of Service Program application now.

Applications for the 2009 Summer of Service Teen Program will be available starting in March. All applications are due to Volunteer Services by May 1, 2009. Participants must be between 14 and 18 years old by June 15, 2009.

Participants must commit to at least one, three-hour shift per week on consecutive weeks for a minimum of seven weeks from June through July. Program participants will be required to attend a minimum of two Clarian Health educational in-services during the summer. Students will be able to choose from a variety of topics related to the health care field.

Numerous service opportunities exist for Summer of Service participants throughout Clarian's Downtown facilities: Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children. Opportunities also are available at Clarian's Methodist Medical Plazas and HealthNet. They include:

Clerical & Administrative Opportunities

Sleep Disorder Center (Daytime; Monday-Friday)

Volunteers assist and provide support to clerical staff in an effort to enable organizational operations and effective service to connecting groups. General responsibilities include: answering phone calls, hand-addressing envelopes, and tending to other pertinent clerical activities. Opportunity requires strong customer service skills and legible handwriting.

Diabetes Center (Daytime: Monday-Friday)

Volunteers assist and provide support to clerical staff. General responsibilities include: collating materials for diabetic education binders that are given to patients, answering phone calls, and tending to other pertinent clerical activities. Opportunity requires strong customer service phone skills and legible handwriting.

Transplant Center (Daytime; Monday-Friday)

Volunteers serve as assistants to the staff of the clinic by interpreting instructions and issues that arise and then implementing actions according to administrative policies and procedures. General responsibilities include: answering phone calls, hand-addressing envelopes, and communicating with transplant center staff. Opportunity requires strong customer service skills and legible handwriting.

Customer Service Opportunities

Patient/Visitor Guide (Daytime/Evenings; Monday-Friday)

Volunteers assist patient visitor representatives by proactively greeting, escorting, and familiarizing patients, families, and visitors with their respective destinations within IU Hospital. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, working-knowledge of the hospital, and requires extensive walking.

Blood Bank - Admitting Specialist Volunteer (Daytime/Evening)

Volunteers complete pre-registration and registration functions for the patient and/or patient representative in a culturally diverse atmosphere. General responsibilities include: obtaining specific information to generate accurate financial and demographic records to ensure maximum reimbursement. Opportunity requires excellent customer service from point of entry to destination in a timely, accurate, courteous, and professional manner.

Gift Shop Volunteers (Daytime/Evening/Weekend)

Volunteers assist staff by stocking and inventorying merchandise, assisting customers, and creating a quality customer service environment. Opportunity requires strong customer service skills and may require extensive walking.

Direct Patient Contact Opportunities

Unit-Patient Liaison Programs (UPL) (Daytime/Evening/Weekend)

Unit-patient lLiaison volunteers are assigned to inpatient units within IU Hospital to provide signature customer and support services to patients, families, visitors, and staff through a general desire for direct volunteer-patient interaction. UPL responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, rounding throughout the unit to check on patients, answering call lights and communicating the patient's need to the proper staff member, stocking unit closets, assisting patients with ordering Classic Cuisine menus, visiting with patients and families, preparing unit welcome packets, and general clerical duties related to the unit. Opportunity requires good communication skills, self-motivation and ability to work independently, extensive walking, and a general sensitivity towards appropriate patient-volunteer experience. Unit-patient liaison opportunities exist on the following inpatient units:

  • 4 North
  • 4 South
  • OB
  • POCU

Out-Patient Liaison Programs (OPL) (Daytime/Evening/Weekend)

Out-patient liaison volunteers provide customer service to patients, families, and visitors, including but not limited to, acting as a liaison between waiting patients and clinical staff, offering emotional support during scheduled appointments or treatments, and directing patients, families and visitors to other resources within the facility, while providing staff with support services such as maintaining a steady flow of patients through exam rooms, maintaining the cleanliness of exam rooms and waiting areas, and transporting medical information and materials between clinics. Out-patient liaison opportunities exist in the following areas:

  • Outpatient Dialysis Center
  • Surgery Waiting
  • SOPA
  • Blood Bank

POCU Assistant (Daytime/Evening; Monday-Friday)

Volunteers provide support to patients, family, and staff in a pre-operative care unit within IU Hospital. General responsibilities include: proactively greeting patients, verifying all required information, identifying patient's preoperative needs and/or problems, and assisting nursing staff with errands and transports to surgical suites. Opportunity requires good customer service skills, a self-motivated personality, and extensive walking.

Limited Patient Contact Opportunities

Volunteer Interpreter Program (VIP) (Daytime/Evening/Weekend)

Volunteer interpreters assist the Language Services department with interpretations for limited English-speaking patients and visitors within Clarian facilities and document translations. Opportunity requires successful completion of a medical interpreting class ("Bridging the Gap") and a thorough interview conducted by the manager of Language Services.

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) (Daytime/Evening/Weekend)

Retired medical and nursing professionals volunteer their time within Clarian facilities to assist nursing and medical staff with day-to-day operations. Opportunity requires dependability, proof of degree and/or license, and ability to perform extensive walking. Get more information about VIM.

Spiritual Care Opportunities

Pastoral Care Volunteer (Daytime/Evening/Weekend)

Volunteers meet & greet all newly-admitted patients to inform them of chaplaincy services and to relay information for follow-up visits. General responsibilities include: providing new patients with pre-printed "Pastoral Care" cards, tending to Bible requests, and scheduling follow-up pastoral visits for patients. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, extensive training, and a second interview.

Eucharist Minister Volunteer (Day/Evening/Weekend)

Volunteer offers communion to Catholic patients, as assigned; makes referrals for patients requesting follow-up visits with a chaplain and assists with Mass as needed. Opportunity requires good communication skills, extensive training, and coordination through the chaplaincy department.
