Indiana has one of the highest rates of both adult and youth obesity among all states in the nation. Clarian Health has partnered with several Indiana companies and organizations to form the Jump Kids Jump Movement. All these groups promote jumping rope as an effective way to get kids excited about exercising and staying fit. These organizations have worked together to create a curriculum that meets state standards for physical education and a supplemental video that demonstrates various jump rope techniques. In addition, there is an existing recreational jump rope curriculum for camps and afterschool programs.
We are pleased that our program has received so much positive attention already. The Indiana State Department of Health will use the program to provide resources for their women's health initiative. The Jump Kids Jump Movement is working with national jump rope advocates and organizations that support physical fitness to use our program.
Beginning in September 2007, this school-based physical education curriculum was piloted in four schools. Beginning in the 2008-2009 school year, all Indiana schools will be offered the chance to use this curriculum and all Jump Kids Jump Movement resources in their schools. The goal of the Jump Kids Jump Movement is to be able to provide jump ropes to all schools participating in the program, so that their students each have a jump rope to use.
On May 2, 2008, the Jump Kids Jump Movement held a jump rope showcase. This first annual showcase focused on helping educators and child advocates develop professional skills to help teach jump rope techniques to children. In future years, the showcase will allow students to demonstrate their skills and compete in jump rope contests. Watch the video below to see the event.
